Imperial War Museum North
Opened in July 2002, Imperial War Museum North offers a new way of understanding war and conflict and the impact it has on all our lives. In the stunning aluminium-clad building – the first in the UK by international architect Daniel Libeskind – visitors will enjoy a multi-sensory experience expressing how war affects everything it touches.
The Museum utilises the world-famous collections of the Imperial War Museum with a number of new display techniques. The Big Picture uses the sound and photography archive to immerse visitors in a spectacular audio-visual show using over 60 projectors. Interactors are on hand to discuss objects from the TimeStacks with visitors, and the Timeline tells the story of the 20th century. ‘Silos’ pick out themes for further study – Women and War, Commonwealth, Legacy, Experience, Impressions, and Science – and a number of iconic objects such as a Harrier Jump-Jet, a Trabant estate car, and a T34 tank are highlights in the breathtaking Gallery. The Special Exhibition Gallery shows temporary exhibitions on the themes of war and conflict.
